CPod is the Workforce of the Future

CPoD (Computer Professionals on Demand) has given students throughout the state of Missouri an opportunity to explore career options within the field of information technology since 1998.  In June, sixteen high school students from around the state broadened their knowledge of information technology by attending a five-day CPoD educational session hosted by State Technical College of Missouri.  This year’s class was represented by eight high schools from across the state while nine of those students attended high schools within the Central Missouri area.

“The need for IT professionals is affecting many industries throughout the United State and Jefferson City businesses are feeling the pressure of a tight labor market,” said Amanda Barch, Enrollment Management Associate for State Technical College of Missouri and CPoD Program Coordinator.  “Local companies understand the need to grow their own workforce organically, and this is exactly why the CPoD program was initiated back in 1998.”

During the five-day session, students are immersed in areas such as cyber safety, web activities, fiber optics, and technical presentations.  In addition, students also spent time in team building activities, classroom training, onsite industry tours, along with spending some time developing new relationships with their new classmates. One session that stands out with students each year is the IT Professional Panel which offers representatives from local IT companies a chance to educate students on employment opportunities, IT trends and the industry’s current employment needs.  Within the forum, students had an opportunity to engage employers by posing various questions on pay, benefits, work attire, travel, and the general day-to-day activities of employees.  The week’s activities finished with a closing ceremony which included group presentations by the students and class awards.
