In April, StartUp Jefferson City hosted the third annual Encouraging Entrepreneurship event at the Capital Event Center to offer free business counseling to local entrepreneurs.  The event was well attended and offered participants an opportunity to engage business professionals for one-on-one business counseling. The Encouraging Entrepreneurship event was the first of two scheduled small business outreach sessions in 2016.

On October 15th, Startup Jefferson City will host the fifth annual Pitch It & Win It event at the Capital Event Center.  Since 2011, the event has offered budding entrepreneurs an opportunity to pitch their business ideas for a chance at winning a portion of $5,000 in prize money.  All monetary awards are directed specifically towards business startup costs and granted based on valid receipts.

Last year’s winners received a share of $10,000 in prize money.  The event’s main sponsor, Rural Missouri, Inc. (RMI) graciously increased the total purse based on the quality of business ideas and potential economic impact to the local community.

The following start-ups each received a $2,000 cash award:

  • Alyssa’s Garden Boutique for Little Girls ($2,000) – Children’s Clothing Store
  • The Blue Skillet ($2,000) – Southern Country Cooking Restaurant
  • Cakems! A Cake Pop Shop ($2,000) – Homemade Cake Pops startup business

Startups receiving a $1,000 cash award:

  • T-Shreds ($1,000) – One-of-a-kind styles designed from vintage T-shirts
  • Waddup Dog ($1,000) – Mobile food cart business
  • Joy to Gladness Children’s Academy ($1,000) – 24 hour daycare service
  • Vision Beyond Eyesight ($1,000) – Motivational and Personal Development Speaker

“The pitch event is a great opportunity to gain helpful business counseling along with a chance at winning startup capital,” said Donna Deetz, StartUp Jefferson City committee member.  “It is the committee’s intent to identify and support as many business startups as possible.”  Over the past five years, StartUp Jefferson City has focused on connecting with entrepreneurs by offering mentorship opportunities to help guide potential business startups during their formation stage.  Communities must be cognizant of the needs of potential business startups, and provide outlets to access business resources and counseling.

Starting a small business can be a rewarding experience, but at the same time it can be immensely challenging and sacrifices must be made to make a dream become reality.  If you or someone that you know is considering starting a new business venture, there are several excellent resources available that provide assistance at no cost.
