The Partners in Education Committee is pleased to announce the 2017 Program of Excellence Award recipients:
- First Baptist Church and South Elementary School
- Alpla of Jefferson City and Lewis & Clark Middle School
Each year the Partners in Education Committee asks the Chamber’s business and school partnerships to share the highlights of their working relationships. Based on the applications, the Committee selects a partnership that displays creativity, dedication and commitment to the students and each other. This year’s selection process was challenging due to the strength of the applications, and the committee decided to award two partnerships, instead of one, for their outstanding work.
Congratulations to the Program of Excellence Award recipients and thank you to all our PIE partners for truly making a difference in our schools and community.
First Baptist Church & South Elementary School
The partnership between South School and First Baptist is certainly strong and flourishing. First Baptist Church supports many projects within the school. For example, many of the donations go to the fourth grade students, which enable them to participate in the Living Museum. The Living Museum is a biography research project where students read about the life of a famous historic Missourian, and then write a biography report to recite to parents and community members. First Baptist Church purchases clothing, accessories, and makeup.
Once a quarter, First Baptist Church gathers wish lists from all staff, for items in their classrooms or areas of work.
First Baptist Church has numerous members who are mentors for the students. Mentee students look forward to visits with their mentors and often comment to adults about when their mentor is coming and what they have planned.
At Christmas, First Baptist works with the school counselor to identify families in need of extra support to make Christmas possible for their families. In additions to adopting families First Baptist Church also donates gloves, hats, and winter coats.
This partnership is certainly making a difference in the lives of students, staff and families at South Elementary.
Alpla of Jefferson City and Lewis & Clark Middle School
The Partnership between Alpla of Jefferson City and Lewis and Clark Middle School has greatly enhanced the education and skills of the students engaged in the school’s robotic team.
Alpla, a leader in the development and production of plastic packaging solutions, provides bottles for several local manufacturers using the latest methods, including robotics technology.
They have shared their knowledge of robotics with the students and offered their support by assisting with the purchase of required equipment so the students could compete in robotic competitions.
Last November, the Lewis and Clark Robotics Team competed in a Lego league qualifier and won the award for “Best Programming”.
Students participating on the Robotics Team are gaining knowledge and skills for further STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) learning in high school and beyond--having Apla as a partner in education truly enhances their education.
