- Missouri State Penitentiary Site Redevelopment
There are 32 acres of undeveloped land surrounding one of Jefferson City’s top tourist attractions, the Missouri State Penitentiary (MSP). The Missouri State Penitentiary Community Partners group is working to select a developer for the area with the intention of attracting residents and tourists to the area. Proposed redevelopment uses would be hotels, entertainment venues, dining, retail, housing/lofts/apartments, offices and/or a convention center.
The area surrounding MSP has been developing over the years starting with the Christopher S. Bond Federal Courthouse, Capitol Avenue Redevelopment, Avenue HQ Entertainment Venue, and the relocation of the Convention and Visitor’s Bureau and the MSP museum.
The Missouri State Penitentiary Community Partners next step will be deciding exactly what the land would be used for and then sending out a lengthy document containing information about the project and some of the qualifications for developers. Those interested contractors would then submit their bids for review and the Community Partners would hold interviews with each developer to help in the selection process.
According to an agreement between the city and state, the city must select a developer within two years of obtaining the land and start construction within four years.
