Entrepreneur events scheduled for 2017

Who is an entrepreneur? According to Merriam-Webster’s definition, entrepreneurs are “individuals who organize, manage and assume the risks of a business or enterprise.” The most common attribute possessed by any entrepreneur is creativity and the willingness to embrace risk. From an economic development standpoint, these creative risk-takers are critical to the growth of any economy as they generate new jobs, increase the tax base, produce new products and services and give back through charities. Communities should encourage and assist entrepreneurs as small business continues to the economic backbone of most all communities.
In an ongoing effort to identify and assist local entrepreneurs, the Jefferson City Chamber’s StartUp JC (StartUp Jefferson City) committee hosted its fourth annual Encouraging Entrepreneurship event this past Saturday morning at the Capital Event Center. StartUp JC was formed in 2012 to assist local entrepreneurs and business startups by offering specific business development resources to help accelerate new business growth. Minimizing risk for entrepreneurs is one of the primary focuses of the StartUp JC committee. The event offered local entrepreneurs an opportunity to obtain direct counseling from local business professionals.
Based on positive participation during the past three Encouraging Entrepreneurship events, StartUp JC committee members wanted to offer entrepreneurs another opportunity to connect with local business professionals in a one-on-one setting. Participants were encouraged to come prepared with questions as business professionals, seated at individual tables, and provided counseling in seven distinct areas of business. “I was amazed with the interest from potential entrepreneurs,” said Judy Brenneke, Judith Brenneke CPA. “All the individuals I met with were eager to learn and asked great questions pertaining to their new business or startup idea.” The event focused on the following areas of interest – Legal, Accounting, Human Resource, Marketing, Permits, Planning, and Finance.
“For new startups, acquiring the proper guidance can be a difficult task and we’re trying to minimize those hurdles,” said Donna Deetz, StartUp Jefferson City Chairman. “This event offers participants a wealth of information in a short consolidated amount of time, and all in one location.” In total, seventeen would-be entrepreneurs attended the Encouraging Entrepreneurship event at the Capital Event Center and each participant was offered continuing business guidance via the StartUp Jefferson City Committee and their partnering resources.
