Two small business and entrepreneurship programs are partnering together to ramp up their services in Jefferson City in cooperation with the Jefferson City Area Chamber of Commerce. The Lincoln University Small Business and Technology Development Center (SBTDC) and the Missouri Women’s Business Center (MoWBC), a program of Central Missouri Community Action, are launching a series of training programs and highlighting their availability to provide no-cost, one-on-one business coaching to small business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs.
The first of the series of workshops was designed to help business owners and entrepreneurs was held at the Jefferson City Area Chamber of Commerce on February 7. The next will be held on March 7 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the topic Human Resources-The Basics. Other upcoming topics include: Quickbooks, Notable Networking Tips, Understanding Financials, Branding, and more. These workshops are offered as lunch and learn, and the $20 fee includes a light lunch. You can register through the Jefferson City Area Chamber of Commerce.
The two programs have also teamed up to offer a monthly “mastermind exchange” to women business owners on the fourth Tuesday of each month from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. This free educational opportunity teaches women about the power of mastermind groups while providing a forum for each business owner to share her successes and challenges and receive support from her peers.
In April, they will begin Jefferson City’s first LaunchU course, a six-week entrepreneurship curriculum designed for aspiring and current business owners. Throughout the course, participants create a business plan using LivePlan software while examining their business or idea from all angles - business model, market conditions, target customers, pricing, financials and more. The course helps participants determine if their business will be successful or find ways to make changes to increase profitability. It offers guest speakers who are experts in their field like attorneys, accountants, marketing professionals, and bankers. The LaunchU course will be offered in Jefferson City on Tuesday and Thursday evenings 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. from April 3 through May 10.
Both programs are funded in part by the U.S. Small Business Administration and have access to a variety of resources to help small businesses. The Lincoln SBTDC also works in partnership with University of Missouri Extension, through which it can access market research data and bring in advisors from throughout the state in a variety of specialties. The MoWBC provides business coaching and educational services in 8 counties including Audrain, Boone, Callaway, Cole, Cooper, Howard, Osage, and Moniteau. It has additional locations in Columbia and Fulton.
The MoWBC and the Lincoln SBTDC offer no-cost one-on-one coaching for future or current business owners in our Jefferson City office by appointment. There are no qualifications or income-limits on their services - they are open to all (the MoWBC even has clients who are men).
Anyone who is interested in starting a business, currently has a business they are trying to grow, or who would like to learn more about these services can call the MoWBC at (573) 777-5236 or the Lincoln SBTDC at (804) 878-4312 for an appointment.
