It is common for Chambers of Commerce to write letters of support to legislators to encourage passing legislation that benefits their community.  In December, the Chamber’s Board wrote letters of support to our local legislators and to the governor for the release of appropriations for three central Missouri projects and in support of a pay raise for state employees.  In some instances, though, more than a letter of support is needed.  The Chamber’s Public Affairs Committee identified the governor’s recommendation for the state to acquire the current St. Mary’s Health Center and locate Lincoln University’s Nursing & Culinary Arts programs there, as an issue and project of great magnitude and economic importance, meriting action beyond a letter of support.

The Jefferson City Area Chamber Board of Directors approved a recommendation from its Public Affairs Committee to create a special task force to facilitate local efforts to seek legislative approval of the St. Mary’s Redevelopment project.

The task force will provide support, analysis, and recommendations for the repurposing of St. Mary’s, and is made up of representatives from the State Office of Administration, Lincoln University, St. Mary’s Health Center, City of Jefferson, County of Cole, local legislators, Public Affairs Committee, Linn State Technical College, the Chamber’s Executive Committee, and several Chamber members at-large.

Using some of the information garnered by the St. Mary’s and Lincoln University Task Forces during Transformation, the new task force will work diligently to provide information in support of this project that would benefit not only Jefferson City and Cole County, but the entire state.  The task force has already held several meetings.  For more information about this task force and its work, contact President Randy Allen at the Chamber.

**The Task Force has met with legislators at the Capitol and will continue to meet as a group throughout the legislative session.
