CPoD Offers Students a Look Into the Future
Published: Monday, November 25, 2019
CPoD (Computer Professionals on Demand) has given students throughout the state of Missouri an opportunity to explore career options within the field of information technology since 1998. In June, twenty high school students from around the state broadened their knowledge of information technology by attending a five-day CPoD educational session hosted by State Technical College of Missouri. This year’s class was represented by fifteen high schools from across Central Missouri.
“The need for IT professionals is affecting many industries throughout the United States and Jefferson City businesses continue to feel the pressure of a tight labor market,” said Amanda Barch, Enrollment Management Associate for State Technical College of Missouri and CPoD Program Coordinator. “Local companies understand the need to grow their own workforce organically, and this is why the CPoD program has been in existence for over 20 years.”
During the five-day session, students are immersed in areas such as cyber safety, web activities, COBOL programming, and technical presentations. In addition, students also spent time in team-building activities, classroom training, onsite industry tours, and also spent time developing new relationships with their classmates. One session that stands out with students each year is the IT Professional Panel which offers representatives from local IT companies a chance to educate students on employment opportunities, IT trends and the industry’s current employment needs. Within the forum, students had an opportunity to engage employers by posing various questions on pay, benefits, work attire, travel, and the general day-to-day activities of employees. The week’s activities finished with a closing ceremony which included group presentations by the students and class awards.
