Recently I had the great opportunity to attend “Lakeside with the Locators”, an event featuring site selection consultants who work site selection projects for companies looking to expand or locate to a community.

This day and a half event was attended by 9 site selection consultants and representatives from more than 25 economic development entities from around the state of Missouri. The participants had the unique opportunity to have many discussions about important topics such as:

  • Best Practices and Recommendations for Success
  • The Site Selection Process: RFP’s to Site Visits
  • Marketing Your Community for Business Attraction
  • Workforce Challenges
  • Industry Trends
  • Economic Development Incentives

Economic Development professionals also had a chance to hear from site selectors on workforce issues.  One of the most important issues affecting workforce development today is labor and skill availability.  The discussion centered on creative strategies for talent development.

A session added to this year’s event was an in-depth presentation on a project that recently located to Rolla.  Hartmann, a Danish company, recently announced its plans to initially create 50 jobs, and that number could grow to 117. Hartmann US plans to make a $50 million to $60 million equipment investment at the site. Two consultants, Joe Gioino and Tim Walden, who led the site search provided information about the project and why the company selected Rolla.  A benefit for Missouri was the fact the top two sites were in Boonville and Rolla. The company will produce recycled egg cartons and will have a big economic impact on the region.

The last session of the event was a business climate policy roundtable discussion with a number of legislators from across our state.  The consultants were able to relay information directly to the state policymakers on the areas where Missouri has strengths and weaknesses. Much of the discussion centered around economic development incentives, including training, and right to work issues.

The site selectors in attendance collectively represented hundreds of years of experience and expertise in economic development.  The consultants were:

  • Vik Bangia, Verum Consulting
  • Alex Frei, Cushman & Wakefield
  • Joseph Gioino, Newmark Grubb Knight Frank
  • Vicki Horton, Myriad Partners
  • Mike Huber, Ernst & Young
  • Tracey Hyatt Bosman, Biggins Lacy Shapiro & Company
  • George Pretty, Parker Poe
  • Chris Schastok, CBRE
  • Tim Walden, Newmark Grubb Knight Frank

Site Selectors represent an estimated 60% of corporate site selection projects ranging from international supply chain analysis to local business relocations and from globally known corporations to new business startups.  Jefferson City will continue to have dialogue with the site selectors to cultivate business attraction leads for our community.
