Ready, Set, START…not in 2020
Published: Saturday, August 1, 2020
The Jeff City START Committee was in full swing gearing up for another active summer. This initiative by the Jefferson City Area Chamber of Commerce seeks to connect employers with potential interns and to showcase Jefferson City to students interning in the area. The program offers interns opportunities to learn more about Jefferson City, to network with community leaders and young professionals, and to grow professionally and personally as they begin to make choices about their career paths.
The committee was excited about another successful year, making improvements and implementing creative ideas and then….COVID. Yes, the dreaded 5 letter word that has affected all of our lives and Jeff City START is no exception. The committee surveyed companies that have had interns participate in Jeff City START in the recent past to determine if they were hiring interns this year. The survey indicated a 95% of companies were not hiring interns due to COVID.
The START committee is comprised of a group of individuals that created this program and a few even participated in this program when they were college students. I want to say a big THANK YOU to this committee, to say that we were all very disappointed in canceling this program would be an understatement. The plan is to come back next year bigger and better than ever and celebrate the 10-year anniversary of this successful program.
