For more than 25 years, Command Web-Missouri has sat quietly on Militia Drive and printed hundreds of millions of paperback books for their main customer Scholastic, Inc. In 2017 alone, Command Web produced more than 200 million books – yes, 200 million! – which are then distributed from Scholastic’s core distribution center to tens of thousands of schools and tens of millions of homes worldwide. During that same period, Command Web has injected millions of dollars into the local economy by maintaining a healthy employee payroll and supports many service agencies within our community.
Beginning in 2018, Command Web Missouri will embark on a recapitalization project which will allow the company to increase its current competitiveness by improving automation and production capacity. Command Web’s ownership understands the challenges affecting printers both domestically and abroad, and is nimble enough to address an ever-changing business environment. Command Web’s recapitalization project will invest millions of dollars into the purchase of a new Web Press, two Norm Bindery units (replacing two existing old binding lines), refurbishment of an existing Web Press, wide range of supporting equipment and improvements to the existing facility.
In addition, current employment levels will increase over the next two years as a result of the recapitalization project. Since 2010, Command Web has maintained a steady employee count of 200 between both full and permanent part-time staff. For 2017, Command Web-Missouri’s total payroll (including overtime) was just shy of $10 million.
“Command Web continues to be a sizeable economic driver for the local economy and a great community partner as well,” said Shaun Sappenfield, Existing Business Manager. “Command Web’s ownership team and local general manager (Chris Huckleberry) have worked tirelessly in their commitment to maintain a world class presence here in Jefferson City.”
Since the commencement of operations in 1994, Command Web-Missouri has experienced three separate expansions (1996, 2002, & 2009), and each has produced additional increases in payroll and the facility’s overall footprint. Since 1994, Command Web Missouri has increased its footprint from 145,000 square feet, to its current total footprint of 245,000 square feet. The current expansion project could potentially add 35,000 square feet to the building to accommodate new equipment and improved efficiencies.
Command Web’s commitment to technology and innovation has made the company a leader in the offset print industry, and this pledge has contributed to its ongoing business growth and contributed to the economic vitality of our community.
