Utility Information

Electricity

Cole County's electricity is provided by Ameren Missouri and Three Rivers Electric Cooperative and is distributed depending upon location.

Ameren Missouri is Missouri's largest electric utility and the third largest distributor of natural gas. The Ameren companies serve 1.2 million electric customers across central and eastern Missouri, including the greater St. Louis area. About 127,000 of that 1.2 million are natural gas customers. With a diverse mix of coal, nuclear, and hydro-electric power plants, the Ameren companies have a net generating capacity of more than 16,400 megawatts, making it one of the nation's strongest generating companies.

Three Rivers Electric Power Cooperative has the reputation for providing reliable and economical electric service in Jefferson City and Cole County for over 60 years. Three Rivers is part of an extensive network of electric cooperatives that together form the third largest electric network in Missouri.

Any electric requirements are easily serviceable due to both companies' Missouri-based locations.

Natural Gas

Natural Gas is also provided by Ameren Missouri which services over 90 Missouri communities and about 127,000 customers, Ameren Missouri is the third largest distributor of natural gas in the state and owns 3,100 miles of natural gas transmission and distribution mains. For industrial areas in Cole County that are not serviced by natural gas, line-extension and purchases from private suppliers are available.

Water

Public water is provided by Missouri-American Water Company and four public water districts.

Missouri-American services more than 1.5 million people in more than 100 communities throughout the state, and also provides leak detection and hydrant testing services for Jefferson City/Cole County.

Public Water Districts #1, #2, #3, and #4 provide water for more than 10,000 residential and industrial customers both inside and outside of the city limits of Jefferson City and throughout Cole County.

In combination, the public water districts and Missouri-American Water Company provide an ample water supply for all industrial purposes.

Sanitary Sewer

The City of Jefferson owns and operates a regional collection and treatment system that provides services to the City users as well as parts of Cole County, extending west to St. Martins and east to the Osage River. Service is also provided to the southern part of Callaway County, including parts of Holts Summit and the ABB Power T&D Company, Inc. within the corporate limits of Jefferson City.

The system encompasses over 400 miles of sanitary sewers and 33 pump stations, serving 70 square miles with 18,100 customer connections. Construction of a new eleven million gallon per day treatment plant is complete; it will provide an additional four million gallon capacity for future growth. This would serve an additional 40,000 population equivalent.

In November 2000, citizens of Jefferson City overwhelmingly approved a $52 million revenue bond issue to build and improve the wastewater facilities for the city. Proceeds from this bond will fund the construction of the new treatment plant and pump stations as stated in the City's Wastewater Utilities Master Plan, as well as upgrades to the collection system and interceptor sewers to developing areas. The new treatment facility uses state of the art technology and is easily expandable through process change.
